What the experts say: Seth Godin

Known for his marketing blog and books, Seth Godin is one of the most well known people in the marketing world today. He is best known for his Purple Cow and Linchpin books. Here are some tips of his that we use in our daily marketing strategy:

  1. Attracting new customers

Seth Godin believes that companies should let the market decide what they make and not the other way around. He says that companies should figure out what the market wants, as opposed to saying “Oh, I have this service – now how do I sell it to my target market”

  1. Be worth connecting with

Godin says that the customers who are interested in your service or product are going to listen and make an effort to engage with you. He explains that if your content stands out and is unique, then others will want to connect with you.

  1. Have a compelling story

“Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make, but about the stories you tell.”

Seth Godin believes that companies should create a compelling story that shows what you are offering is different and better from other similar products/services available in the market.

  1. Biggest mistakes by marketers

He explains in his blog that there are 3 big mistakes that marketers make: a) Assuming that people are rational b) Assuming that people are eager for change c) Assuming that once someone knows things the way you know them, they will choose what you choose.

  1. Social Networking for Small Businesses

Godin says that social networking is important for small businesses in the sense, they shouldn’t hand out thousands of business cards and friend everyone they know on Facebook. Instead, small businesses should help people achieve their goal and be reliable while doing so, through offline methods like referring people and online methods like connecting people.
